A name squeeze is simply a page dedicated to one thing, getting a new subscriber. Most have just a tease of information, a promise of a freebie, and a place for the subscriber to fill in their name and email address.
Even in the age of declining returns for email marketing, the name squeeze page is still extremely effective - it simply requires more attention to the details.
A good way to look at the benefit of name squeezes is to think about the same results going to a mini-site that has one, and one that doesn't.
If your mini-site was just your sales page, and 1000 people came to visit it one day, with a 3% conversion (twice the average on the Internet), you'd make 30 sales. With a $20 product, that's not bad at all.
Now what if you had a name squeeze page that people came to, before they got to the sales page? That means, while their mind is still mostly open, 1000 people come to the page.
This article by Christopher Knight of Ezine Universe, says that for pay per click, a 19% conversion from subscriber to visitor isn't unusual. From affiliates 40% isn't out of the question.
So let's say that you get the same conversion rate out of the people who subscribed, but didn't buy the first time, and bought the first time you followed up with them. 160 more people are available for follow up (minus the 3% who already bought). 4 or 5 more sales, another $80 - $100.
And what if 3% of each mailing also bought over the next five follow ups? 20 more sales, or $400. Almost double the sales, just because you have a name squeeze page and followed up with them.
This gets really exciting when you think about the fact that you can follow up with some of these people by offering them related items, or follow-up with those who buy from you with a higher-priced back end product.
Getting money from a targeted list isn't difficult. It's building a list from scratch that takes time and effort - but for results like that it's truly worth it.
